Greek Mythology - The Trojan War

Chapter 12

Filohtitis

In English

Having the air blowing towards the direction that they wanted, the Greeks were ready to start their trip. The hundreds of ships were leaving the port of Avlida heading for Troy. The weather did not give them any problems.
They had to stop on a few islands. One of them was a small island off the coast of Limnos (Λήμνος). They had to make a sacrifice there, to the nymph Chrisi (Χρυσή). Chrisi was also the name of the island. Hercules had visited the island years ago, where he offered a sacrifice. Filohtitis, Hercules' friend, was with him at the time so he knew the location of the alter.

The Greek leaders went with Filohtitis. While they were looking for the alter, a snake came out of the bushes and bit Filohtitis on the leg. The poison of the snake did its dirty job. He was in a lot of pain and a terrible smelling odor started coming from the wound. Filohtitis was not sleeping for many days and nights. He was screaming from the pain. The soldiers started to complain because they could not rest. The Greek leaders did not have any other choice but to leave Filohtitis behind. They passed by Limnos, left him at the beach with his bow and arrows and continued their trip to Troy.

As we'll see they will return for him and ask for his help in the tenth year of the war.
