   After a long trip, Theseus' ship arrived in Crete. The Cretans took them to the palace until they would arrange the day that they would throw them in the labyrinth. Minoas had a daughter. Her name was Ariadni (Αριάδνη). Ariadni saw Theseus and she fell in love with him. She did not want him to die but she could not go against her father's decision. One day she took Theseus aside and gave him a spool of yarn. She advised him to tie the one end at the beginning of the labyrinth and unroll it as he and the others were walking through the rooms of the labyrinth. This way if Theseus would kill Minotaur he could follow the yarn back to the entrance of the labyrinth.

   The day had come for the young people to enter the labyrinth. The Cretans took them to the entrance. They could hear the roar of the monster from outside. They entered the labyrinth and while they were walking through the dark rooms, Theseus was unrolling the yarn as Ariadni told him. They did not walk too far, when they saw the monster. Minotaur bent his head and with his horns attacked Theseus who was in the front. The hero tried to stop the powerful monster. He wrestled with him. Minotaur stepped back and attacked again. At some moment, Theseus was able to grab him by the horns. While wrestling with the half human he was able to pull his sword. He pushed the sword into Minotaur's chest. With a big roar the monster fell breathless to the ground.

   Theseus asked everybody to stay close to one another. They followed the yarn back to the exit. There, they headed for the sea. Theseus was smart. He damaged the Cretan's ships before they got into their ship to return back to Athens.

   Safe and on the way back, everybody was happy. Because of their excitement though they made a big mistake. They forgot to raise the white sails.
   Aegeas, who was waiting with agony for his son's return, was looking at the sea everyday, hoping to see the ship with the white sails, bringing back his son. Day after day he was looking at the sea. He could see the ship from far away. When he realized that the sails were the black ones, thinking his son and the others were dead, he fell into the sea and drowned. From then this sea took his name; it was named "Aegean Sea".

   Μετά από ένα μακρύ ταξιδι, το πλοίο του Θησέα έφτασε στην Κρήτη. Οι Κρήτες τους πήραν στο παλάτι μέχρι να κανονίσουν την μέρα που θα τους πετούσαν στον λαβύρινθο. Ο Μίνωας είχε μια κόρη. Την έλεγαν Αριάδνη. Η Αριάδνη είδε τον Θησέα και τον ερωτέυτηκε. Δεν τον ήθελε να πεθάνει αλλά δεν μπορούσε να πάει ενάντια στην απόφαση του πατέρα της. Μια μέρα πήρε τον Θησέα στην άκρη και του έδωσε ένα κουβάρι νήμα. Τον συμβούλεψε να δέσει το νήμα στην αρχή του λαβύρινθου και να το ξετυλίγει όταν αυτός και οι άλλοι περπατούσαν στα δωμάτια του λαβύρινθου. Έτσι αν ο Θησέας σκότωνε το Μινώταυρο θα μπορούσει να ακολουθήσει το νήμα πίσω στην είσοδο του λαβύρινθου.

   Η μέρα ήλθε για τους νέους να μπουν στον λαβύρινθο. Οι Κρήτες τους πήγαν στην είσοδο. Μπορούσαν να ακούσουν το μουγκριτό του τέρατος απ' έξω. Μπήκαν στον λαβύρινθο και ενώ περπατούσαν στα σκοτεινά δωμάτια ο Θησέας ξετύλιγε το νήμα, όπως του είπε η Αριάδνη. Δεν προχώρησαν πολύ μακρυά όταν είδαν το τέρας. Ο Μινώταυρος, χαμήλωσε το κεφάλι του και με τα κέρατά του, επιτέθηκε στον Θησέα που ήταν μπροστά. Ο ήρωας προσπάθησε να σταματήσει το δυνατό τέρας. Πάλεψε μαζί του. Ο Μινώταυρος πήγε προς τα πίσω και επιτέθηκε πάλι. Σε μια στιγμή ο Θησέας μπόρεσε να αρπάξει τα κέρατά του. Όπως πάλευε με το μισό-άνθρωπο, μπόρεσε να τραβήξει το σπαθί του. Έσπρωξε το σπαθί στο στήθος του Μινώταυρου. Με ένα μεγάλο μουγκρητό το τέρας έπεσε άψυχο στο έδαφος.

   Ο Θησέας ζήτησε απ' όλους να μείνουν κοντά ο ένας στον άλλο. Ακολούθησαν το νήμα πίσω στην έξοδο. Εκεί, πήγαν προς στην θάλασσα. Ο Θησέας ήταν έξυπνος! Έκανε ζημιά στα καράβια των Κρήτων πριν πάρουν το πλοίο τους για να γυρίσουν στην Αθήνα.

   Ασφαλείς και στο δρόμο προς την Αθήνα, όλοι ήταν χαρούμενοι. Από την χαρά τους ξέχασαν να υψώσουν τα άσπρα πανιά.
   Ο Αιγέας, που περίμενε με αγωνία το γυρισμό του γιού του, κοιτούσε στην θάλασσα μέρα με τη μέρα. Μπορούσε να δει το καράβι από μακρυά. Όταν συνηδητοποίησε ότι τα πανιά ήταν μαύρα, νομίζοντας ότι ο γιος και οι άλλοι ήταν νεκροί, έπεσε στην θάλασσα και πνίγηκε. Από τότε η θάλασσα αυτή πήρε το όνομά του; ονομάζεται "Αιγαίο Πέλαγος".
