Theseus and the Criminals

Greek Mythology - Theseus

Part 1

In English

Theseus left Argolida and started his long trip towards Athens. In those years many criminals were robbing and killing the people that were passing through their territory.
Theseus met the first criminal close to Epidavros (Επίδαυρος). His name was Perifitis (Περιφήτης). He was a giant and it was said that he was the son of Hephaestus. Perifitis was robbing the travelers and then he was killing them with his steel club. Theseus wrestled with him and won easily. He killed him with the same steel club that he used to kill his victims.

He continued his trip and he arrived at Isthmus (Ισθμός). There, another criminal named Sinis (Σίνης), hidden in the woods, was waiting for his victims. There were pine trees at both sides of the road. Sinis was very strong. He was bending the tops of two pine trees, and was tying the legs of the victims, one on each tree top, and would then let go. The trees returning back to their position, would rip the victims in half. Our hero killed Sinis using the same way and freed the area from this cruel killer.
