   Hercules went to Tiryntha (Tiryns), as ordered by the Oracle, to be under the orders of his cousin, Eurystheus.
   Eurystheus was a very weak man. When he saw Hercules, that was wearing the skin of a lion that he had killed, he got very scared! Eurystheus was also afraid that Hercules was going to take his throne. That's why he was trying to keep Hercules away. Soon he assign him his first task. Hercules had to find and kill the lion of Nemea.

   This lion was very wild and strong. It was terrorizing the area for many years by killing animals and humans. Hercules left right away to go to Nemea. When he arrived there, he saw that the mountains, were deserted by all living creatures. He searched days for the lion. Finally he found out that the lion was hiding in a cave. Hercules was waiting until the lion left and enter the cave. The cave had two openings. He sealed the one opening with a big rock. Then he chased the lion, forcing it to enter the cave. The lion had nowhere to go. After a long and scary fight with the beast, he hit it with his club and killed it. He skinned the lion and brought its skin to Eurystheus for proof.

   Eurystheus did not like the fact that Hercules was successful in this task. He had to think of something more challenging and dangerous...

   Ο Ηρακλής πήγε στην Τίρυνθα, όπως τον διέταξε το Μαντείο, για να μπει κάτω από τις διαταγές του ξαδελφού του, Ευρυσθέα.
   Ο Ευρυσθέας ήταν πολύ αδύναμος άνθρωπος. Όταν είδε τον Ηρακλή, που φορούσε το δέρμα ενός λιονταριού που είχε σκοτώσει, φοβήθηκε πολύ! Ο Ευρυσθέας φοβόταν επίσης, ότι ο Ηρακλής θα του έπαιρνε τον θρόνο. Γι' αυτό προσπαθούσε να κρατήσει τον Ηρακλή μακριά. Σύντομα του ανάθεσε τον πρώτο του άθλο. Ο Ηρακλής έπρεπε να σκοτώσει το λιοντάρι της Νεμέας.

   Αυτό το λιοντάρι ήταν πολύ άγριο και δυνατό. Τρομοκρατούσε την περιοχή για πολλά χρόνια, σκοτώνοντας ζώα και ανθρώπους. Ο Ηρακλής έφυγε αμέσως να πάει στην Νεμέα. Όταν έφτασε εκεί, είδε ότι τα βουνά ήταν άδεια, από όλα τα ζωντανά. Έψαξε μέρες για το λιοντάρι. Τελικά ανακάλυψε ότι το λιοντάρι κρυβόταν μεσα σε μια σπηλιά. Ο Ηρακλής περίμενε μέχρι που έφυγε το λιοντάρι, και μπήκε στην σπηλιά. Η σπηλιά είχε δύο ανοίγματα. Έκλεισε το ένα άνοιγμα με μια μεγάλη πέτρα. Μετά κυνήγησε το λιοντάρι, και το ανάγκασε να μπει στη σπηλιά. Το λιοντάρι δεν είχε που να πάει. Μετά από μια τρομαχτική πάλη, ο Ηρακλής χτύπησε το λιοντάρι με το ρόπαλό του και το σκότωσε. Μετά το έγδαρε και πήρε το δέρμα του στον Ευρυσθέα για απόδειξη.

   Του Ευρυσθέα δεν του άρεσε που ο Ηρακλής ήταν επιτυχής σε αυτό τον άθλο. Έπρεπε να σκεφτεί κάτι πιο δύσκολο και πιο επικύνδυνο...
