Demeter is the goddess of agriculture. She makes the plants grow and
produce their goods. Without her powers nothing can grow. The farmers pray to her to have
a good harvest. The Greeks began to worship Demeter the most, when they started
to concentrate on agriculture.
Demeter had a beautiful daughter Persephone (Περσεφόνη). Persephone was married
to Hades. Two thirds of the year, Persephone lives with Demeter. During this period the trees
are green and the plants are producing fruits and the other necessities.
This time are the seasons of spring, summer and autumn.
The rest of the year Persephone returns to the underworld to live with her husband,
and Demeter gets very sad. The trees are loosing their leaves and plants are
unfruitful. This is winter time. With this myth the ancient Greeks explained
the cycle of the seasons.

Η Δήμητρα είναι η θεά της γεωργίας. Κάνει τα φυτά να μεγαλώνουν και να
παράγουν τα αγαθά τους. Χωρίς τις δυνάμεις της τίποτα δεν μπορεί να μεγαλώσει.
Οι αγρότες προσεύχονται σ' αυτήν για να έχουν καλή
σοδειά. Οι Έλληνες την λάτρεψαν πιο
πολύ όταν άρχισαν να συγκεντρώνονται στην γεωργία.
Η Δήμητρα είχε μια όμορφη κόρη την Περσεφόνη. Η Περσεφόνη ήταν η γυναίκα του
Άδη. Τα δύα τρίτα του χρόνου, η Περσεφόνη ζει με την Δήμητρα.
Κατα την διάρκεια αυτής της περιόδου, τα δέντρα
είναι πράσινα και τα φυτά παράγουν φρούτα και τις άλλες ανάγκες. Αυτές είναι οι εποχές
της άνοιξης, του καλοκαιριού, και του φθινόπωρου.
Τον υπόλοιπο χρόνο η Περσεφόνη επιστρέφει στον κάτω κόσμο να ζήσει με τον
άντρα της και η Δήμητρα είναι λυπημένη. Τα δέντρα χάνουν τα φύλλα τους, και τα φυτά
είναι άκαρπα. Αυτός είναι ο χειμώνας. Με αυτό το μύθο οι Έλληνες εξήγησαν τον κύκλο των εποχών
