Telemachus Meets his Father

Greek Mythology - The Odyssey

Chapter 23

In English

The dogs were barking again in Eumaeus' house but this time not because of a stranger. Telemachus was there and the dogs playfully were jumping around him. Eumaeus heard the barks and he went out. He saw Telemachus and with tears in his eyes hugged him and kissed him. Telemachus saw the beggar and asked who he was. Eumaeus told him the story that Odysseus had told him. The swineherd asked Telemachus to take Odysseus to the palace but Telemachus said no because of the suitors and ordered Eumaeus to go and tell Penelope that he had returned. Odysseus asked him what was happening and Telemachus told him all that he and his mother were going through since his father had not returned from the war. Odysseus told him that it's better to die trying to chase them away than to let them ruin everything that he owns.

Eumaeus left to go to the Palace. At this point Athena appeared in front of Odysseus. Telemachus could see her. She asked him to step out of the house and she transformed him back to himself. Telemachus was speechless seeing the change. He thought that the beggar was a god that was standing there trying to test him.
"No Telemachus, I'm not a god. I'm your father..." Odysseus said.

Odysseus explained how Athena helped him and how he got there. Finally Telemachus believed him. They sat and talked. Odysseus advised his son to go to the palace and take all the weapons from the main hall and hide them. All, except weapons for the two of them. He advised his son that nobody should know about his return. Not even Penelope.

Meanwhile the ship that brought Telemachus back, docked in the port. The sailors sent a messenger to Penelope to tell her that her son had returned. In the mean time the suitors that heard that Telemachus was back planned his assassination. But one of them, Amphinomus (Αμφίνομος), did not agree with this decision. The suitors listened to him and went to the palace. Penelope heard what the suitors were planning. She came down to the hall and yelled at them, but Eurymachus calmed her down by telling her that they'll never lay a hand on her son.

Eumaeus, who had gone to the palace, returned to his house. Athena transformed Odysseus into a beggar again and Eumaeus told them all that had happened in the city...
