Daedalus and Ikarus

Greek Mythology

In English

Daedalus (Δαίδαλος) was a famous architect and sculptor. He was so talented that his sculptures were practically lifelike. He took on his nephew Thalos (Θάλος) as an apprentice and taught him everything. Daedalus saw how exceptionally talented the boy was, and out of jealousy and fear that he would surpass him, he killed him.
Thalos' body though was discovered, and Daedalus was sentenced to death. He escaped and fled to the island of Crete. The King of Crete, Minoas, had heard of Daedalus' greatness and brought him to his palace where he had the architect design and build a structure to keep his sacred minotaur in.

This building was named the Labyrinth and was constructed as a maze that one could not escape without knowing its secret.  Daedalus designed many other beautiful buildings for the king. Minoas was very pleased with Daedalus' work. But he was afraid that the great architect will leave Crete. He locked Daedalus and his son Ikarus inside the Labyrinth.

Daedalus thought of a way to escape. He constructed two pairs of wings from lite wood and feathers. He glued them together with wax, and he and his son would fly away from Crete.
Before they started to fly he gave advise to his son.
"Don't fly too high because the sun will melt the wax and the wings will fall apart. And also don't fly very low close to the sea, because the wings will get wet and heavy and you will fall into the sea".

Daedalus and Ikarus started their trip. Everything was going fine but unfortunately Ikarus was so excited that he was flying and forgot the advise of his father. He flew too close to the sun and as the wax melted he fell into the sea close to a small island and drowned. Daedalus saw his son falling and landed on the island. He found his sons body and buried it close to the beach.

The island was named "Ikaria" after Ikarus and the sea was named "Ikario Pelagos (sea)".
Daedalus reached Sicily where he ended up building a fortress around the city for the King, Kokalos.
