Greek Mythology - The Trojan War

Chapter 8

Achilles Joins the War

In English

Achilles was the son of Peleus (see Eris' Apple) and the goddess Thetis. Thetis new that Achilles would be killed when he grew up and she did everything to prevent that. Since he was a baby, Thetis was coating his body with ambrosia and was holding the infant over fire to make his body tough. She dipped the infant in the waters of Styx (Στύγα = Styga), one of the rivers of the underworld, to make him invulnerable. His body became invulnerable except for his heel, which his mother held him by when she dipped him in Styχ.

Achilles had an excellent education and became one of the best warriors in Greece. His teacher was the centaur Heron (Χείρωνας). When Achilles grew up his mother, who knew as we said his destiny, hid him on the island of Skyros (Σκύρος). There, in the palace of king Likomedes (Λυκομήδης) he was always dressed in women's clothes so nobody could recognize him.

The foreteller of the Greeks, Kalhas (Κάλχας) told the Greek kings that they will conquer Troy only if Achilles is with them in the war. Kalhas also told Odysseus and Menelaus where they'll find him.
They went to Skyros looking for him but they could not find him. Then Odysseus had an idea. They dressed as merchants selling clothes. Within the stock of clothes they hid a set of weapons, a shield and a helmet. They went to the palace to sell clothes to the girls. All the girls in the palace started to look at the beautiful dresses, except one. That one was staring at the weapons.

Suddenly, sounds of weapons and warriors could be heard in the palace. Odysseus had told some of his men to do that on purpose. All the girls started running to find a place to hide. But one, grabbed quickly the weapons and ran out to meet the enemy.

That's how Odysseus recognized Achilles. They told him about Paris and the war that they planned, and Achilles was glad to go with them. With him went his beloved friend Patroklos (Πάτροκλος). Peleus gave his son upon leaving his armor that the gods had given to him on his wedding day, his spear that Heron gave him and his horses that Poseidon gave to him as a gift.
