The king of Argos, Akrisius (Ακρίσιος), had a daughter named
Danae (Δανάη). Danae was an extremely beautiful woman.
Akrisius was told by the oracle that his grandson would kill him.
He thought that by locking up Danae, he could avoid this prophecy coming true.
He built an underground room and there he locked his daughter, along with her servant.
The great god Zeus fell in love with Danae.
One day he transformed himself into golden rain and entered her jail.
Shortly thereafter, Danae gave birth to a son.
Akrisius did not believe that Zeus had fathered the infant,
and fearing the prophecy, killed the servant and put Danae along with her baby
in a wooden box and threw it into the sea.
The waves took the box into the shore of the island Seriphos (Σέριφος),
where Diktys (Δίκτυς), the brother of the king of Seriphos, retrieved it when
he was fishing.
He was amazed at what he found inside. After Danae told him their
story, he took her and her child in, and raised the boy as his own,
naming him Perseus.
Perseus became a very strong and very handsome man.

Ο βασιλιάς του Άργους, ο Ακρίσιος, είχε μια κόρη που την έλεγαν Δανάη.
Η Δανάη ήταν μια εξαιρετικά όμορφη γυναίκα. Το μαντείο είπε στον Ακρίσιο πως ο εγγονός
του θα τον σκότωνε. Νόμισε πως κλειδώνοντας την Δανάη, θα απόφευγε αυτήν την προφητεία.
Έχτισε ένα υπόγειο δωμάτιο και εκεί κλείδωσε την κόρη του με τον υπηρέτη της.
Ο μεγάλος θεός Δίας ερωτεύτηκε την Δανάη. Μια μέρα μεταμορφώθηκε σε χρυσή
βροχή και μπήκε στην φυλακή της. Σύντομα μετά απ' αυτό, η Δανάη γέννησε ένα γιο.
Ο Ακρίσιος δεν πίστεψε ότι ο Δίας ήταν ο πατέρας του μωρού, και φοβισμένος από την
προφητεία, σκότωσε τον υπηρέτη και έβαλε την Δανάη και το μωρό σε ένα ξύλινο κουτί
και το έριξε στη θάλασσα.
Τα κύματα πήραν το κουτί στις ακτές του νησιού Σέριφος, όπου ο Δίκτυς,
ο αδελφός του βασιλιά της Σέριφου, το διέσωσε όταν ψάρευε. Έμεινε έκθαμπος απ' το τι
βρήκε μέσα. Αφού η Δανάη του είπε την ιστορία τους, περιμάζεψε αυτή και το παιδί, και
μεγάλωσε το αγόρι σαν να ήταν δικό του, ονομάζοντάς τον Περσέα.
Ο Περσέας έγινε πολύ δυνατός και πολύ όμορφος άντρας.
