The Kingdom of the Dead

In English    Odysseus headed north to find the kingdom of the dead. He told his companions where they were going and they got very scared, but they obeyed his orders. Days later they arrived at the land of Cimmerians (Κιμμέριοι). There the sun never shined, and it was cold. They pulled their ship on the beach and they found the rivers that spilled into the Aherodas river. There they dug a deep pit. Odysseus poured honey, wine and water in the pit. He spread barley flour and then, on top of it, he butchered the lambs that Circe gave to him. Their blood soaked the earth. Immediately, the souls of the dead came and were trying to drink the blood of the sacrifice.    He saw many souls. Among them he saw fallen heroes from the Trojan war. He burned the lambs and prayed to god Hades and Persephone. Then he stood there and did not let any soul drink the blood, keeping them at bay with his sword, until Tiresias' shadow came. Tiresias had to be the first to drink.    Odysseus saw the shadow of Elpenor. He asked Odysseus to bury his body. He saw his dead mother, Adiklia (Αντίκλεια). She had died when he was in Troy. He did not let her drink the blood either. Finally Tiresias' soul appeared. Odysseus let him drink. The blood revitalized his soul.    After he drank the blood, Tiresias told Odysseus: " Poseidon is angry with you because you blinded his son, Polyphemus." Then Tiresias told him that he and his companions will return to their land, if his companions do not harm the cattle of the god of the Sun (Helios). If they harm the cattle they all will be lost, but him. He will return and he will take revenge on the suitors.    Tiresias told Odysseus that he must complete another quest after he arrived on his island. He must find the land of the people that do not know of the sea and have never seen a ship. In this land, Odysseus must offer a sacrifice to god Poseidon. After that he will return to Ithaca, offer sacrifices to all the gods, and he'll live a quiet life until the day that he'll die... Top In Greek    Ο Οδυσσέας πήγε βόρεια να βρει το βασίλειο των νεκρών. Είπε στους συντρόφους του που πήγαιναν και φοβήθηκαν πολύ, αλλά υπάκουσαν τις διαταγές του. Μέρες αργότερα έφτασαν στην χώρα των Κιμμερίων. Εκεί ο ήλιος δεν έφεγγε ποτέ, και ήταν κρύο. Τράβηξαν το πλοίο στην παραλία και βρήκαν τα ποτάμια που χύνονται στον ποταμό Αχέρωντα. Εκεί έσκαψαν ένα βαθύ λάκο. Ο Οδυσσέας έχυσε μέλι, κρασί και νερό στο λάκο. Σκόρπισε αλεύρι κριθάρινο και μετά, πάνω από το λάκο, έσφαξε τα αρνιά που του έδωσε η Κίρκη. Το αίμα τους πότισε τη γη. Αμέσως οι ψυχές των πεθαμένων ήρθαν και προσπαθούσαν να πιουν το αίμα της θυσίας.    Είδε πολλές ψυχές. Ανάμεσά τους είδε πεσμένους ήρωες από τον Τρωικό πόλεμο. Έκαψε τα αρνιά και προσευχήθηκε στο θεό Άδη και την Περσεφόνη. Έπειτα στάθηκε εκεί και δεν άφηνε καμμιά ψυχή να πιεί αίμα, κρατώντας τις μακρυά με το σπαθί του, μέχρι που ήρθε η σκιά του Τειρεσία. Ο Τειρεσίας έπρεπε να πιει πρώτος.    Ο Οδυσσέας είδε την σκιά του Ελπήνορα. Ζήτησε από τον Οδυσσέα να θάψει το σώμα του. Είδε την νεκρή μητέρα του, την Αντίκλεια. Είχε πεθάνει όταν αυτός ήταν στην Τροία. Δεν άφησε ούτε κι αυτήν να πιει αίμα. Τελικά εμφανίστηκε η ψυχή του Τειρεσία. Ο Οδυσσέας τον άφησε να πιει. Το αίμα αναζωογόνησε την ψυχή του.    Αφού ήπιε το αίμα, ο Τειρεσιας είπε στον Οδυσσέα: " Ο Ποσειδώνας είναι θυμωμένος μαζί σου γιατι τύφλωσες τον γιό του, τον Πολύφημο." Έπειτα ο Τειρεσίας του είπε πως αυτός και οι σύντροφοί του θα επιστρέψουν στην χώρα τους, αν οι συντροφοί του δεν βλάψουν τις αγελάδες του θεού Ήλιου. Αν βλάψουν τα γελάδια όλοι θα χαθούν, εκτός απ' αυτόν. Αυτός θα επιστρέψει και θα εκδικηθεί τους μνηστήρες.    Ο Τειρεσίας είπε στον Οδυσσέα πως πρέπει να κάνει μια άλλη αναζήτηση μετά την άφιξη στο νησί του. Πρέπει να βρει την χώρα των ανθρώπων που δεν ξέρουν από θάλασσα και δεν έχουν δει ποτέ καράβι. Σε αυτή τη χώρα, ο Οδυσσέας πρέπει να προσφέρει θυσία στο θεό Ποσειδώνα. Μετά από αυτό θα επιστρέψει στην Ιθάκη, θα προσφέρει θυσίες σε όλους τους θεούς, και θα ζήσει μια ήσυχη ζωή μέχρι την ημέρα που θα πεθάνει...
