The Cattle of the Sun

Greek Mythology - The Odyssey

Chapter 11

In English

After a while the island of Thrinacia appeared. Odysseus tried to persuade his companions to pass the island without stopping. But Eurylochus, asked him to stop because everybody was tired. Odysseus agreed and they docked on the island.

Odysseus advised them not to touch the cattle of the god Helios (the god of the sun). He made them swear. They prepared for dinner. It was night and a strong north wind started to blow. They fell asleep. The wind was blowing all night. In the morning they pulled their ship onto the land, because they were afraid that the storm would destroy it. Again Odysseus reminded everybody not to touch the cattle.

For one month the wind was blowing strong. Odysseus and his companions were forced to stay until the storm passed. The food supply finished and they were eating fish and whatever they could hunt. Odysseus went to pray to the gods. He prayed to send them a calmer wind so they could leave the island. After he finished praying he fell asleep.

Eurylochus then found the opportunity to persuade the rest to butcher some of the cattle and eat it. He said to the others, that when they would return to Ithaca they would build a temple for the god of the Sun and he would forgive them.
They listened to him. They chose some nice cattle and they slaughtered them. They offered sacrifices to the gods and they started cooking them. Meanwhile, Odysseus woke up. He smelled the roasted meat in the air, and screamed to the gods:
"Oh gods, why did you put me to sleep? My companions did something very bad: they butchered the cattle of the Sun."

While this was happening, nymph Labetia (Λαμπετία) told Helios what happened. He went to the other gods and complained. Helios asked them to punish them and Zeus promised him, that he would destroy their ship and kill them all...

Odysseus yelled at the men for what they had done. The gods sent them a sign. The skins of the dead cattle were moving... When the storm stopped, they pushed the ship into the sea and left the island. After a while, when the island of Thrinacia was far away, Zeus sent a terrible storm. The mast of the ship broke and killed the captain. All of Odysseus' companions fell into the sea and drowned. Only Odysseus survived. The wind changed and was pushing the broken ship towards Skylla and Charybdis. When the ship was near there Odysseus noticed the whirling water. He grabbed onto the branches of a tree that was very low and the ship was swallowed by Charybdis. Odysseus waited until the monster spat out the water. When it did, he jumped onto the pieces of wood that remained of his ship and passed the narrow passage.

For nine days our hero was fighting the waves, until the sea pushed him onto the island of the nymph Calypso.
