Cicones and the Lotus-Eaters

Greek Mythology - The Odyssey

Chapter 3

In English

Odysseus and his companions arrived in the land of the Cicones (Κίκονες). They took the city of Ismarus (Ίσμαρος) and they knocked down its walls. They took the women for slaves.
Odysseus tried to persuade his companions to leave right away. But they delayed. In the mean time, the Cicones from around the city put together a big army. They attacked Odysseus. The fight took place close to his ships. The Cicones were many and Odysseus lost the battle. They ran to the ships. Many good soldiers were killed. Odysseus and the rest of his people left the land of the Cicones.

When they were in the open sea, Zeus sent a north wind. A big storm started. The wind ripped their sails and after three days they were able to repair them. They traveled through another storm and they lost their way. The ships arrived after 10 days on an island.

Odysseus and his companions lit a fire on the beach and they prepared to eat. He sent three companions to see what kind of people lived there. The people of the island, the Lotus-eaters, accepted them peacefully and they gave them a fruit to eat. That fruit, a lotus, had the power to make anyone that ate it lose their memory. When they ate it they forgot everything. They forgot about their island and what they were supposed to be doing. They did not want to go. They forgot everything...

Odysseus tied them up and took them to the ships. He ordered the ships to sail immediately. He was scared that the others would taste the lotus and they would forget their goal.
