In the town of Stimfalou of Arkadia there were some wild birds with
wings of bronze, and beaks and nails of copper. Everybody was terrified of these
birds. They were attacking and killing animals and humans. The most important thing
about these birds, was their ability to throw parts of their bronze wings,
like arrows down to earth killing everyone trying to harm them.
Eurystheus called Hercules and ordered him to kill these birds.
It was very difficult even for Hercules to execute this order, because of the
special abilities of the Stimfalian birds.
Goddess Athena helped Hercules with this task. She gave him two rattles, and told
him to go close to the birds' nests and hide. There, Hercules should start to
hit the rattles.
The birds they would then try to fly away because of the noise, and Hercules would be able
to kill them as they were trying to flee. So he did.
The birds started to fly all together making circles in the sky throwing
their deadly feathers to the ground.
None of their feathers hit Hercules.
One after another they were falling dead from Hercules' arrows. The ones that
survived flew away and never returned to the area again.
Hercules finished the task and returned to Tirintha (Tiryns) where
Eurystheus was waiting with more orders...

Στην πόλη του Στυμφάλου της Αρκαδίας, ήταν μερικά άγρια πουλιά με
μπρούτζινα φτερά και χάλκινες μύτες και νύχια. Όλοι ήταν τρομοκρατημένοι με αυτά
τα πουλιά. Επιτίθονταν και σκότωναν ζώα και ανθρώπους. Το πιο σημαντικό όμως με
αυτά τα πουλιά ήταν η ικανότητά τους να πετούν τα μπρούντζινα φτερά τους, σαν βέλη
κάτω στη γη σκοτώνοντας όποιον προσπαθούσε να τους κάνει κακό.
Ο Ευρυσθέας κάλεσε τον Ηρακλή και τον διέταξε να σκοτώσει αυτά τα πουλιά.
Ήταν πολύ δύσκολο ακόμη και για τον Ηρακλή να εκτελέσει αυτή την διαταγή, γιατί οι
Στυμφαλίδες Όρνιθες είχαν ειδικές ικανότητες.
Η θεά Αθηνά βοήθησε τον Ηρακλή μ' αυτό το κατόρθωμα. Του έδωσε δύο κρόταλα, και του είπε
να πάει κοντά στις φωλιές των πουλιών και να κρυφτεί. Εκεί ο Ηρακλής θα χτυπούσε τα
κρόταλα. Τα πουλιά θα προσπαθούσαν να πετάξουν
εξαιτίας του θορύβου, και ο Ηρακλής θα μπορούσε να τα σκοτώσει όταν
προσπαθούσαν να δραπετεύσουν. Έτσι έκανε.
Τα πουλιά άρχισαν να πετούν όλα μαζί, κάνοντας κύκλους στον ουρανό και πέταγαν τα
θανατηφόρα φτερά τους στο έδαφος.
Κανένα όμως δεν χτύπησε τον Ηρακλή.
Το ένα μετά το άλλο έπεφταν νεκρά από τα βέλη του Ηρακλή. Όσα επέζησαν
πέταξαν μακρυά και δεν γύρισαν ποτέ στην περιοχή.
Ο Ηρακλής τελείωσε και με αυτό το κατόρθωμα και γύρισε στην Τίρυνθα
όπου τον περίμενε ο Ευρυσθέας με περισσότερες διαταγές...
