The city of Thebes and the city of Orhomenos had a war.
Thebes lost this war and they had to pay heavy taxes to Orhomenos for many years.
Hercules (Ηρακλής) was now a grown, strong man.
While he was at Thebes (Θήβα) he defeated the King of Orhomenos and made its citizens pay double the
taxes back to Thebes.
In return for this deed, the king of Thebes
Creon (Κρέοντας) gave his daughter's hand in marriage to Hercules.
Megara (Μεγάρα) gave birth to three sons.
He was living happily with Megara, but Hera could not stand seeing him happy. As
told previously, Hera hated
Hercules because she was jealous of the fact that Zeus had a son with another woman.
She sent him an illness. His mind became confused from the illness and he killed his children
and his brother's (Ifikleas) children.
When he finally got better, he regretted what he
had done. He went to the Oracle of Delphi to ask the god Apollo what he should
do to make the gods forgive him.
Apollo, through Pythia's mouth, told him that he had to go to Tiryntha
(Tiryns) and
work for 12 years for his
cousin Eurystheus (Ευρυσθέας) as punishment. After these twelve
years he would be forgiven. The oracle also foresaw
that he will become immortal.
During these 12 years, Hercules accomplished 12 great tasks.

Η Θήβα (Thebes) και ο Ορχομενός ήταν σε πόλεμο. Η Θήβα έχασε σε αυτό τον πόλεμο,
και έπρεπε να πληρώνει μεγάλη φορολογία στον Ορχομενό, για πολλά χρόνια.
Ο Ηρακλής ήταν πια μεγάλος και δυνατός άντρας. Οταν ήταν στην Θήβα
νίκησε το
βασιλιά του Ορχομενού και ανάγκασε τους πολίτες του να
πληρώνουν διπλό φόρο στην
Θήβα.
Γι' αυτό το κατόρθωμα, ο βασιλιάς της Θήβας Κρέοντας
(Creon) έδωσε στον
Ηρακλή, το χέρι της κόρης του σε γάμο. Η Μεγάρα
(Megara) του έκανε τρεις γιους.
Ζούσε ευτυχισμένα με την Μεγάρα, αλλά η Ήρα δεν μπορούσε να τον βλέπει
ευτυχισμένο. Όπως είπαμε προηγουμένως, η Ήρα μισούσε τον Ηρακλή, γιατί ζήλευε για το
γεγονός ότι ο Δίας είχε γιο με άλλη γυναίκα. Του έστειλε μια αρρώστια.
Το μυαλό του Ηρακλή θόλωσε απο την αρρώστια και σκότωσε τα παιδιά του και τα παιδιά του αδελφού του (Ιφικλέα).
Όταν τελικά έγινε καλύτερα, μετάνοιωσε για ότι έκανε. Πήγε στο μαντείο
των Δελφών, να ρωτήσει τον θεό Απόλλωνα
(Apollo) τι πρέπει να κάνει για να τον συγχωρέσουν οι
θεοί.
Ο Απόλλωνας, με το στόμα της Πυθίας
(Pythia), του είπε πως έπρεπε να
πάει στην Τίρυνθα και να δουλέψει 12
χρόνια για τον εξάδελφό του τον Ευρυσθέα, για τιμωρία. Μετά από αυτά τα 12 χρόνια, οι θεοί θα τον συγχωρούσαν. Το
μαντείο προφήτεψε επίσης, πως ο Ηρακλής θα γίνει αθάνατος.
Κατά την διάρκεια των 12 χρόνων, ο Ηρακλής έκανε 12 άθλους.
