In one of his battles Hercules took a very beautiful woman, Ioli, as a prisoner.
When he came back he wanted to perform a sacrifice to the gods. He sent somebody to
Deianira to give him a clean tunic. Deianira had heard about Ioli and was afraid that
Hercules would take her as his wife. She remembered Nessos' blood and drenched the tunic
with it.
Hercules wore the tunic and after a while he started having tremendous pain from the
poisonous blood of Nessos. He tried to pull the tunic off, but it had stuck to his flesh.
His companions feeling sorry for him took him to the oracle of Delphi. Pythia said
that he must go to Mount Heiti, light a fire and await Zeus' decision.
They started to collect wood. Hercules' pain was getting stronger. He was pulling his
tunic off, and pieces of flesh were coming off with it. He was suffering so much
that he climbed up on the pile of wood
and asked his companions to light the fire and burn him. Nobody was moving...
Finally Filohtitis passed by and lit up the fire. Hercules gave him his bow
and arrows. The fire started burning high and suddenly a thick cloud with thunder and lightning
surrounded Hercules and took the hero close to his father, Zeus. Hercules became immortal,
and took his place among the gods.

Σε μια απ' τις μάχες του, ο Ηρακλής πήρε μια πολύ όμορφη γυναίκα, την Ιόλη, αιχμάλωτη.
Όταν γύρισε ήθελε να κάνει θυσία στους θεούς. Έστειλε κάποιον στην Δηϊάνειρα να του δώσει ένα καθαρό χιτώνα.
Η Δηϊάνειρα είχε ακούσει για την Ιόλη και φοβόταν πως ο Ηρακλής θα την έπαιρνε για γυναίκα του.
Θυμήθηκε το αίμα του Νέσσου και μούσκεψε τον χιτώνα με αυτό.
Ο Ηρακλής φόρεσε τον χιτώνα και μετά από λίγο άρχισε να έχει φοβερούς πόνους από το δηλητηριασμένο
αίμα του Νέσσου. Προσπάθησε να βγάλει τον χιτώνα, αλλά
είχε κολλήσει στην σάρκα του.
Οι σύντροφοί του τον λυπήθηκαν και τον πήραν στο μαντείο των Δελφών. Η Πυθία είπε ότι πρέπει να πάει στο
βουνό Οίτη, να ανάψη φωτιά και να περιμένει απόφαση από τον Δία.
Άρχισαν να μαζεύουν ξύλα. Οι πόνοι του Ηρακλή γίνοταν πιο δυνατοί. Τραβούσε τον χιτώνα του
και μαζί, έβγαιναν κομμάτια από τη σάρκα του. Υπέφερε τόσο πολύ που σκαρφάλωσε στο σωρό με τα ξύλα και ζήτησε τους
συντρόφους του να ανάψουν την φωτιά και να τον κάψουν. Κανένας δεν κουνιόταν...
Τελικά ο Φιλοχτήτης πέρασε από κει και άναψε την φωτιά. Ο Ηρακλής του έδωσε το τόξο και
τα βέλη του. Η φωτιά άρχισε να δυναμώνει και ξαφνικά ένα πυκνό σύννεφο με βροντές και
αστραπές, περικύκλωσε τον Ηρακλή, και πήρε τον ήρωα κοντά στον πατέρα του, τον Δια. Ο Ηρακλής έγινε αθάνατος
και πήρε την θέση του ανάμεσα στους θεούς.
