There was a king in Thrace with the name Diomedes. People said
that he was the son of Ares. Diomedes had four wild horses, so wild, that even lions were
scared of them. He was feeding these horses live humans.
Eurestheus sent Hercules to bring these horses to him. Our hero passed through
many cities. In the city of Lokrida, he met Abderus (Avdiros), and they became friends. He was
a young and strong person and admired Hercules. He liked to hear Hercules' stories about
his tasks. Abderus followed Hercules, along with many other young men,
to help him take the wild horses from Diomedes.
Hercules and the others arrived at Thrace and in the night, he broke the
stable's gate and saw the horses chained up.
There the hero tied all the chains together and pulled the
horses with all his strength. The people of the palace heard
the noises and got up, took their weapons and, with Diomedes
as their leader, started to chase Hercules and his companions.
Hercules told his friend Abderus
to watch the horses and alone he started to fight Diomedes and his army.
One by one they were falling dead from the poisonous arrows of Hercules. Hercules hit Diomedes
with his club and killed him. Seeing their king dead, his soldiers, started to run. Hercules turned towards his
companions, and saw the horses tearing apart Abderus. With great difficulty he pulled
Abderus' body away from the horses. It was too late... Abderus was dead.
Hercules buried his friend and there, he built a city named Avdira.
He brought the horses to Eurestheus' stables. But when Eurestheus saw them
he got so scared that he ordered to set them free.

Ήταν ένας βασιλιάς στην Θράκη που λεγόταν Διομήδης. Ο κόσμος έλεγε
πως ήταν γιος του Άρη. Ο Διομήδης είχε τέσσερα άλογα, τόσο άγρια, που ακόμα και τα
λιοντάρια τα φοβόταν. Τα έτρεφε με ζωντανούς ανθρώπους.
Ο Ευρυσθέας έστειλε τον Ηρακλή να του φέρει τα άλογα. Ο
ήρωάς μας πέρασε από πολλές
πόλεις. Στην πόλη Λοκρίδα, γνώρισε τον Άβδηρο, και έγιναν φίλοι. Ο Άβδηρος ήταν
νέος και δυνατός
και θαύμαζε τον Ηρακλή. Του άρεσε να ακούει τις ιστορίες για τους άθλους του Ηρακλή.
Ο Άβδηρος τον ακολούθησε, μαζί με άλλους νέους, για να τον βοηθήσει να πάρει τα άγρια άλογα από
τον Διομήδη.
Ο Ηρακλής και οι άλλοι έφτασαν στην Θράκη και την νύχτα, έσπασαν την πύλη
του στάβλου και είδαν τα άλογα δεμένα με αλυσίδες. Εκεί ο ήρωας, έδεσε όλες τις αλυσίδες μαζί
και τράβηξε τα άλογα με όλη την δύναμή του. Οι άνθρωποι του παλατιού άκουσαν τον θόρυβο
και σηκώθηκαν, πήραν τα όπλα τους και, με τον Διομήδη αρχηγό, άρχισαν να κηνυγούν τον Ηρακλή
και τους συντρόφους του.
Ο Ηρακλής είπε στον φίλο του, Άβδηρο, να προσέχει τα άλογα και μόνος του
άρχισε να πολεμά τον Διομήδη και το στρατό του. Ένας - ένας έπεφταν νεκροί από τα
δηλητηριασμένα βέλη του Ηρακλή. Ο Ηρακλής χτύπησε τον Διομήδη με το ρόπαλό του και τον σκότωσε.
Βλέποντας τον βασιλιά τους νεκρό, οι στρατιώτες, άρχισαν να τρέχουν.
Ο Ηρακλής γύρισε προς τους σύντροφούς του, και είδε τα
άλογα να ξεσκίζουν τον Άβδηρο. Με μεγάλη δυσκολία
τράβηξε το κορμί του Άβδηρου από τα άλογα. Ήταν όμως πολύ αργά... Ο Άβδηρος ήταν νεκρός.
Ο Ηρακλής έθαψε τον φίλο του και εκεί, έχτισε μια πόλη που την ονόμασε
Άβδηρα.
Έφερε τα άλογα στους στάβλους του Ευρυσθέα. Αλλά όταν ο Ευρυσθέας
τα είδε φοβήθηκε τόσο πολύ, ώστε διέταξε να τα αφήσουν ελεύθερα.
