King Eurestheus ordered Hercules to capture the golden horned deer.
This deer was the favorite animal of goddess Artemis. There were 5 of these animals,
the four were captured by her to drive her chariot. The 5th escaped to the mountains
of Arcadia where it was destroying the crops for many years.
Hercules left to try to capture the deer. When he arrived at the mountainside of Arcadia
he saw the deer, but fast as the wind that it was, it disappeared from his view.
For a year he was tracking the deer down and his patience was finally paid back.
One day while the deer was drinking water after having grazed the fields, Hercules
chased it.
The deer was so full that it could not run as fast as usual and thus Hercules was
able to catch it. He tied up its legs and put it on his strong shoulders to carry it
back to the king.
On the way though Artemis appeared in front of him and requested that he give her the
deer that for so many years evaded her.
Hercules bowed to the powerful goddess, and explained what the oracle told him
and the orders that he had received from Eurestheus.
Artemis understood and let Hercules take the deer to Tiryntha.

Ο βασιλιάς Ευρυσθέας διέταξε τον Ηρακλή να πιάσει το χρυσο-κέρατο
ελάφι. Αυτό το ελάφι ήταν το αγαπημένο ζώο της θεάς Άρτεμης. Υπήρχαν 5 από αυτά τα
ελάφια, τα τέσσερα τα έπιασε η θεά για να τραβούν το άρμα της. Το πέμπτο δραπέτευσε
στα βουνά της Αρκαδίας, όπου κατάστρεφε τα σπαρτά για πολλά χρόνια.
Ο Ηρακλής έφυγε για να προσπαθήσει να πιάσει το ελάφι. Όταν έφτασε κοντά στα
βουνά της Αρκαδίας είδε το ελάφι, αλλά γρήγορο σαν τον άνεμο όπως ήταν, εξαφανίστηκε
από μπροστά του. Ένα χρόνο προσπαθούσε να
ακολουθήσει τα ίχνη του, και τελικά
πληρώθηκε για την υπομονή του. Μια μέρα όταν το ελάφι έπινε νερό αφού είχε βοσκήσει στα χωράφια,
ο Ηρακλής το κυνήγησε. Το ελάφι ήταν τόσο χορτάτο που δεν μπορούσε να τρέξει όπως
συνήθως και έτσι ο Ηρακλής μπόρεσε να το πιάσει. Του έδεσε τα πόδια και το έβαλε
πάνω στους δυνατούς ώμους του, για να το μεταφέρει στον βασιλιά.
Στο δρόμο όμως η Άρτεμις εμφανίστηκε και του ζήτησε να της
δώσει το ελάφι που τόσα χρόνια της ξέφευγε.
Ο Ηρακλής υποκλίθηκε στην πανίσχυρη
θεά και της εξήγησε για τον
χρησμό και τις διαταγές που έλαβε από τον Ευρυσθέα.
Η Άρτεμις κατάλαβε και άφησε τον Ηρακλή να πάρει το ελάφι στην Τίρυνθα.
