Dionysus - Ο Διόνυσος

Greek Mythology - Gods & Goddesses

In English

Dionysus was the son of Zeus and Semele (Σεμέλη). Semele was the daughter of the king of Thebes (Θήβα), Kadmos (Κάδμος). Zeus loved her so much, that he had promised her that he'll do whatever she asked him. Hera was very jealous of her and she convinced Semele to ask from Zeus to appear in front of her as a god, with all his power and grandeur.
Zeus tried to change her mind but Semele wanted to see him as she asked. Zeus appeared in front of her as the king of gods. Thunder could be heard around him. In a little bit the palace was on fire. Semele, pregnant with Dionysus, knew now that she will die. Before she died though, she gave birth to Dionysus.

Dionysus was a tiny and very weak baby. Zeus saw the baby and realized that he will not survive. He took the baby and put him in his thigh to grow stronger. After a few months, Dionysus was born again from his father's thigh.

Dionysus is the god of wine. He is traveling around the world with his company of satyrs and maenads. He's always wearing a crown made of grape leaves. He's teaching the humans how to grow the grapevines and how to make wine from the grapes. Wherever he goes there is a celebration.

In modern Greece every summer there are "wine celebrations" in many cities and villages. The people dance, eat and drink. And as you guessed, the wine is for free! These celebrations are whatever reminder is left of the worship of Dionysus in ancient Greece.

Dionysus became one of the Olympian gods, when Hestia decided that she did not want to live in Olympus.
